About Our Denomination, the United Church of Christ
The motto of the United Church of Christ (UCC) is from Jesus' prayer from John 17:21, "That they may all be one." The UCC was formed by denominations merging together in 1957. Their belief then and our belief today, is that it is better to work together in mission and ministry than to compete with each other. We believe it is best to use our energy and efforts in serving others in the name of Christ, than it is in trying to show which denomination Christ might like best.
Christ Church is a local church of the United Church of Christ (UCC). In the UCC, we have a covenantal governance, rather than a hierarchy. Local churches are both relatively autonomous and in covenantal relationship with one another and the denomination. We are autonomous in the sense that there is much that the members of the congregation are able to vote on and decide for themselves. We are in covenantal relationship in that we have given up some of that autonomy in order to better work together. The sole head of the church is Jesus Christ.
The United Church of Christ is divided into 39 conferences by geographical region. There are four conferences in Pennsylvania. We are a part of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference. Our conference is further divided into seven associations. We are members of the Reading Association.
