Christ Church has been working with the Good Shepherd Mission in Puttur, India to help fight poverty, build and maintain a hospital, support orphans, and help care for impoverished elderly.

 

Child Sponsorship

Through our Global Ministries we sponsor two children abroad.  A young 7 year old boy in the Philippines, and a Palestinian child in Israel.  To protect their privacy we will not list their names on this site.  Global Ministries is a partnership between our UCC denomination and the Disciples of Christ denomination.  Two of the main reasons that we sponsor through Global Ministries are: (1) we trust the organization and we know the funds are going to children in need and are being used well; and (2) all of the funds donated towards child sponsorship go towards helping the child, and none are taken out for administration or television advertisements.

 Fight Against AIDS in Africa

Annually we have been contributing funds to fight AIDS in Africa.  This is done both through the UCC "Global AIDS Ministry" and through the Siyazama Project.  For more information on how the UCC is fighting AIDS go to www.ucc.org.   

 

Crop Walk

 

Annually we participate in the Church World Service (CWS) Crop Walk.  This activity is organized by the Reading Council of Churches and Reading Food Bank.  We spend a Sunday afternoon walking with other churches and organizations to raise funds and awareness for local and world hunger.  Generally, 75% of the funds raised go to the Reading Food Bank to fight local hunger, and 25% go to fight world hunger through CWS.  Usually this takes place in October.

 

Disaster Aid

We provide disaster relief throughout the year throughout the world.  We support our UCC's general disaster relief fund, which is entitled "One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS)."  We also often respond to specific disasters.  Most often this is done through sending funds through the UCC, as by doing so 100% of our funds go to those in need and none is taken out for administration costs.  The following is a sampling of some of the disasters for which we have provided relief aid:

Afghanistan Refugees

The UCC responds to an average of one disaster every 2½ days.

 

Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM)

We contribute to Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM), which is the general support for the UCC missions and ministries throughout this nation and throughout the world.
